About Our Project
The City of Monte Sereno, the City of Saratoga, the Town of Los Gatos have partnered with Caltrans to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety along the portion of Highway 9 that passes through the various jurisdictions. The Highway 9 project area includes a variety of operational characteristics that create challenging, if not dangerous, conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians. Two recent fatalities have illustrated the need for improvement.
The project corridor is included on the local and regional bicycle network and is a critical link between the Saratoga village and downtown Los Gatos. Highway 9 provides convenient access to existing recreational facilities, schools and other destinations. The project area is critical because it is the only direct link between various parts of the community. As a result, thousands of automobiles, bicycles and pedestrians travel the project corridor every day. The project corridor lacks a designated bicycle/pedestrian facility and travelers often do not feel safe to travel the short distance by non-motorized means. The Highway 9 Bicycle/Pedestrian Improvement Project will provide non-motorized travelers a safe, convenient and continuous facility that will encourage modal shift.
